Signs Your Garage Door Is Off Track

The clearest sign is a roller you can see sitting outside the metal track. Other signs show up before that happens.

  • The door hangs at an angle or leaves a gap on one side when closed.
  • You hear scraping or popping as the door moves.
  • The door stops partway and will not go up or down.
  • Part of the track is bent, dented or pulled away from the wall.

What Causes a Garage Door to Come Off Track?

A bump from a car is the most common cause. Backing out too early, or nudging the track with a bumper, bends it just enough for a roller to slip out.

Other causes we see in Perrysburg garages:

  • A broken lift cable or spring. The door loses support on one side and twists. Our cable and roller repair page explains this in more detail.
  • Loose track bolts. Years of opening and closing shake the brackets loose, and the tracks slowly drift apart.
  • Worn rollers. Chipped or wobbly wheels can climb right out of the track.
  • Something in the way. A bike or trash can under a closing door can push it sideways.
  • A door frozen to the floor. On icy January mornings, the bottom seal can freeze to the concrete. If the opener keeps pulling, it can strain the cables and knock the door out of line.

Off Track at the Top, on One Side or Crooked

Where the door came off tells us what went wrong.

Off at the top: The rollers left the curved part of the track where it bends toward the ceiling. This often happens when the opener travel limit is set too far, or a top bracket is loose.

Off on one side: One cable, roller or bracket on that side has failed. The other side is still holding the weight, which puts it under heavy strain.

Off track and crooked: The door is twisted in the opening. This usually means a cable broke or came off its drum, and the door should not move at all until we secure it.

How We Put a Garage Door Back on Track

We secure the door first, then fix the cause, not just the symptom. Pushing the rollers back in without fixing the cause means the door comes off again. Here is what a repair visit looks like:

1

Clamp the door so it cannot drop, and take tension off the springs if needed.

2

Straighten the bent track, or replace the damaged section.

3

Guide the rollers back into the track and replace any that are cracked.

4

Check the hinges, cables and brackets, and tighten or replace loose parts.

5

Line up both tracks so they are straight and the same distance from the door.

6

Balance the door and test the opener's force and auto reverse settings.

Please don't try to force a door back on track yourself. The door can weigh over 150 pounds, and it is under spring tension while you work on it.

Can a Bent Garage Door Track Be Repaired?

Yes, if the bend is small. We can often straighten a gentle bend on site. A sharp kink or crease weakens the steel, so we replace that section instead.

If the door itself is bent, the answer depends on the panel. One damaged section can often be swapped out. See our garage door panel replacement page for how that works.

Off Track Questions

No. Unplug the opener so nobody presses the button. The motor can pull the door further out of line and bend the panels or track.

Most jobs take one to two hours. If the track needs a new section, we can usually finish the same visit.

Keep the tracks clear, tighten loose bolts once a year and replace rollers when they start to wobble. A yearly tune up catches loose brackets before they cause trouble.
