Garage Door Cable and Roller Repair in Perrysburg, Ohio
A snapped cable leaves your door hanging crooked, and worn rollers make it grind and shake. We handle garage door cable repair, roller replacement and the brackets that hold them for homes across Perrysburg. Most jobs take one visit. Call (419) 794-3008.
If a cable just broke, keep the door closed and keep cars out from under it until we get there.
Signs of a Broken or Frayed Cable
The most common sign is a door that sits lower on one side. You may also see a cable hanging loose next to the door or wound in a tangle on the drum at the top.
- One side of the door rises before the other.
- The bottom of the door is not level with the floor.
- You can see broken strands or rust on the cable near the bottom bracket.
- The door jerks, stops partway or slams down.
What Happens When a Garage Door Cable Breaks
The door loses support on that side. Each cable runs from a bracket at the bottom corner of the door up to a drum on the spring bar. The two cables share the weight. When one snaps, the full load swings to the other side, and the door tilts.
A tilted door can bind in the tracks, bend a panel or jump off track. That is why a small part can turn into a bigger repair if the door keeps running.
Cables usually fail at the bottom, where they sit closest to the floor. Snow and slush melt off cars in a Perrysburg garage all winter, and that salty water rusts the cable ends and brackets. Rubbing against a bent track and losing tension after a spring breaks are the other two big causes.
Is It Safe to Open a Garage Door With a Broken Cable?
No. The door can twist, drop or come out of the tracks while it moves. Leave it closed and unplug the opener so nobody presses the button by mistake.
If the door is stuck open, keep people and cars out from under it. Doors stuck open at night are one of the calls we take through our emergency garage door service.
When a Cable Breaks on One Side
We replace both cables, even when only one has snapped. The cables wear at the same rate, and an old cable next to a new one throws the door out of balance.
We also check the drums and bottom brackets. A rusted bracket will cut through a new cable within months, so we replace it at the same time if it is worn.
How We Fix a Broken Garage Door Cable
Replacing a cable means taking the tension off the springs first, which is not a safe job to try yourself. On a torsion system, the springs hold enough force to injure you badly if a tool slips. Here is what we do:
1
Clamp the door in place so it cannot move.
2
Unwind the springs safely with proper winding bars.
3
Remove the old cables and check the drums, brackets and track.
4
Install new cables cut to the right length for your door height.
5
Wind the springs back, level the door and test it through several full cycles.
Garage Door Rollers: When to Replace Them
Replace rollers when they grind, wobble or have chipped wheels. Rollers ride inside the tracks on both sides of the door, usually 10 on a standard door. When the wheels wear out, the door gets loud and puts extra strain on the opener.
Older doors often have plain steel rollers. We usually suggest nylon rollers with sealed ball bearings. They run much quieter and need less upkeep, which helps if there is a bedroom or home office over the garage.
Why Is My Garage Door So Loud?
Worn rollers are the most common cause. Dry hinges, loose bolts and a chain drive opener add to the noise. Try oiling the hinges and roller bearings first. If the door still rattles or grinds, the rollers likely need replacing.

Cable and Roller Questions
How long do garage door cables last?
About as long as the springs, often 7 to 10 years. Rust, a bent track or a broken spring can wear them out much sooner.
Can a cable come off the drum without breaking?
Yes. If the door hits something on the way down, the cable can go slack and slip off the drum. We can usually wind it back on and adjust it without new parts, as long as it is not frayed.
Should I oil my garage door rollers?
Oil the bearings on steel rollers and the hinges two or three times a year with a garage door lubricant. Skip heavy grease, which collects dirt. Sealed nylon rollers need very little care.
Can a broken cable make my door come off track?
Yes. A door that tilts on one side often pops a roller out of the track. If that already happened, see our off track garage door repair page.
