Some opener problems take two minutes to fix yourself. We list those below, so you don't pay for a service call you don't need.
Why Your Garage Door Opener Is Not Working
Most opener failures come down to power, the safety sensors, the remote or a worn gear. Check the easy ones first.
- No power. The opener plugs into a ceiling outlet. A tripped breaker or GFCI outlet in the garage will shut it off.
- Lock mode is on. Many wall panels have a lock or vacation button. When it is on, the remotes stop working but the wall button still runs the door.
- Blocked or dirty sensors. The two small eyes near the floor must see each other, or the door will not close.
- Dead remote battery. If the wall button works and the remote doesn't, start with a new battery.
- Stripped drive gear. If the motor runs but the chain or belt does not move, the plastic gear inside has likely worn out.
- Broken spring. If the door rises a few inches and stops, the opener may be fine. The spring that does the heavy lifting could be broken. See our spring repair page.
If none of these fixes it, the logic board, travel limits or motor may need a technician.
Door Goes Down and Then Back Up
This is almost always the safety sensors. Every opener sold in the US since 1993 must reverse when something blocks the door, under the UL 325 safety standard. If the sensors can't see each other, the opener thinks something is in the way.
Look at the small lights on each sensor. Both should glow steady. If one blinks or is off, wipe the lenses with a soft cloth, check for spider webs and gently line them up again. Low winter sun shining straight into a sensor can cause the same problem late in the afternoon.
If the sensors look fine and the door still reverses, the close force or travel limit may need adjusting. That is a job for us, since the wrong setting can make the door unsafe.
Remote or Keypad Not Working
Replace the battery first. If that does not help, the remote may have lost its pairing with the opener.
To pair it again, press the learn button on the motor unit, then press the remote button within 30 seconds. The opener light will blink or click when it takes the code. Keypads pair the same way. If you just moved into a Perrysburg home, it is smart to clear the old codes and pair only your own remotes.
Opener Light Blinking or On but Not Moving
A blinking light usually means the opener found a problem and is showing an error code. On LiftMaster and Chamberlain units, a set number of flashes points to a sensor or wiring issue. The code list is on a sticker inside the light cover.
If the light comes on but the door does not move, check three things. The lock mode may be on, the emergency release may be pulled, or the drive gear may be stripped.
How to Open Your Garage Door by Hand
Pull the red emergency release cord while the door is closed, then lift the door with the handle. The cord disconnects the door from the opener so it moves freely.
If the door is very hard to lift by hand, stop. A heavy door almost always means a broken spring, and lifting it can hurt you.
To reconnect the opener after pulling the cord, close the door by hand and pull the cord toward the door once. Then press the remote. The trolley will slide back and lock on.
To open the door from outside, you need an emergency release lock. It is a small keyed lock at the top of the door. We can add one if your home does not have one.

Repair or Replace Your Opener?
Repair it if the opener is under about 12 years old and the fix is one part, like a gear, sensor or board. Replace it if the opener is older than 15 years or the repair costs close to half the price of a new one.
Older openers also lack features that newer ones have. Those include rolling code security, battery backup and phone control. If your opener came with the house in the 1990s, a new one is usually the better buy.
New Garage Door Opener Installation
We install LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie openers and haul the old one away. The right pick depends on your door and how close it is to living space.
- Chain drive: lowest price and very strong, but loud.
- Belt drive: much quieter, a good choice if a bedroom sits over the garage.
- Wall mount: mounts beside the door instead of the ceiling, good for high ceilings or storage racks.
For power, a 1/2 horsepower opener handles most single doors and lighter two car doors. Heavy insulated or wood doors do better with 3/4 horsepower or more. Most new models also connect to WiFi, so you can open, close and check the door from your phone with apps like myQ.
Opener Questions We Hear Often
Is there a reset button on garage door openers?
Most openers don't have one reset button. You can reset one by unplugging it for a minute, then plugging it back in. To erase all remote codes, hold the learn button for about six seconds until the light goes out.
Why do I have to hold the wall button down for the door to close?
The opener lets you close the door this way when the safety sensors fail. It is a backup, not a fix. Clean and line up the sensors, or call us to replace them.
Which garage door opener is best?
For most Perrysburg homes, a belt drive LiftMaster or Chamberlain with WiFi and battery backup is a solid pick. If you want the lowest price, a Genie chain drive works well on a lighter door.
Do you work on older Craftsman openers?
Yes. Many Craftsman openers were built by Chamberlain, so parts are easy to find. If yours is very old, we will tell you honestly whether it is worth fixing.
